My name Katie Sasek and I was born on May 12, 1992 in Alexandria Hospital in Northern Virginia. My Dad graduated from Georgetown University, my Mom went to Northern Virginia Community College, and both of my sisters went to JMU. I am the youngest in my family.
I grew up in Centreville, VA, and went to Westfield High School. Where I grew up, my best friends and I all live within a one-mile radius. We have stayed best friends since Kindergarten and have taken several beach trips together including a trip to Punta Cana after we graduated.
I have been playing lacrosse since I was in fifth grade. I played varsity lacrosse for my high school since freshman year; I was the only freshman to make the team. By senior year, I was one of the all time highest scorers with a total of 56 goals for that season alone. We ended up beating our biggest rival in the District Championship game. I also played for a travel team called Supernova Select, which was sponsored by George Mason University. When I was on that team, we had the opportunity to travel to Palm Springs, California for a tournament.
When I was seven years old, my neighbor knocked out my two front teeth. We were all outside playing and he started to swing a badminton racket around in a circle, then he accidentally hit my mouth. Since then, the dentist has not allowed me to eat corn on the cob or bite into whole apples. I miss that. But other than that, no one can tell that my teeth are fake.
James Madison was my first choice in schools. I applied to four schools and was thrilled when I was accepted to all four. It was not a hard decision to make because I fell in love with JMU the first time I visited. So far my experience here has been amazing. I love meeting new people and being so independent. Having to live with someone completely new who I have never met before was a huge step in my life. It took some getting used to but I have managed to live with it. It is very interesting getting to know someone from a completely different background than me.
Throughout my childhood, my dad’s job required him to travel to over 65 different countries in the world. Having a father who traveled to many third world countries opened up my eyes to how my life is compared to people’s lives in Africa. It gave me a different perspective on life that you wouldn’t normally see in a teenager. World travels is one of my favorite topics in which I love talking about.
My current major is ISAT; I have chosen that major because science and math are the most interesting topics to me. When I graduate from college, I want to try to pursue a career with Lockheed Martin or a similar business. I really enjoy the science behind traveling to the moon or even just working on an airplane and how it runs. That is what I have always wanted to do.
